India's capital Wakes Up to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that registered in the "critical" category.

Various sections of the capital recorded an AQI above 500, which translates to ten times the recommended threshold established by the WHO.
Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing 15-20x exceeding acceptable limits.
Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of fireworks during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that engulfs the capital as colder weather approaches.
However recently, the recently formed city administration petitioned the judicial authority to request a easing of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only about 30% lower impact – as a compromise between "tradition and ecological concerns".

The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab province pointing to worsening air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in India following the festivities.

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a significant issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem gradually deteriorating.
Around the festival period, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the environment has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.

This crisis in the capital is caused by a combination of various sources including automobile exhaust, construction debris, construction activities, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby regions of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers illegally set their fields on fire to prepare for next season, creating hazardous pollution that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.
Medical and Financial Toll
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants calling home the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.
This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can result in cancer.
The pollution is estimated to be accounting for 10,000 untimely fatalities each year in the city.
